The Election Commission has said that a case will be registered under the criminal section against those who cast double votes. The Chief Electoral Officer said in a press release that the list of bogus votes found in the voters’ list will be handed over to the returning officer. The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has taken stern action to prevent double voting in the wake of the High Court’s intervention.
District Electoral Officers and Deputy Electoral Officers are responsible for preventing double voting. Presiding officers should check whether double votes are cast. In case of double voting, action should be taken against the perpetrator under Section 171D of the Indian Penal Code.
The bogus vote list will be handed over to all the presiding officers. Those on the list are required to give an affidavit before voting at the booth. The commission said it would take fingerprints and photos of those on the list. The High Court had directed that the list of double votes should be given to the political parties and the presiding officers.
Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala told the court that there were 4.34 lakh double votes and the figures were released on the website. However, the Election Commission has informed the High Court that the names of 38,586 voters doubled in the list.
