Kerala on Tuesday reported a case of black fever. An elderly man from Vellikulangara in Thrissur has been diagnosed with the disease. He has been admitted to the Thrissur Medical College Hospital. He was diagnosed with the disease a year ago.
Black fever, also known as visceral leishmaniasis, is transmitted through the bite of infected female phlebotomine sandfly.
Despite the presence of sand flies in many parts of the state, the Department of Health estimates that the number of disease-carrying flies is low. The highest incidence of black fever in the country is in West Bengal, Odisha and Bihar.
