A Muslim mob attacked a team of doctors and other medical staff in Moradabad, a town in western Uttar Pradesh, when they went there to take a possible COVID 19 patient to hospital. Attackers, including women and children, threw big boulders and other weapons on the team seriously injuring Doctor SC Aggarwal. Outnumbered by attackers, the policemen had no option but to flee the spot to save their lives. The attackers damaged the police vehicle also.
According to Dr Aggarwal, the team had gone to Nawabpura to take four relatives of a Covid-19 patient. “After we took them to the ambulance a large mob gathered and started pelting stones. The intervention by an old man saved our lives,” he added.
UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who has ordered the invocation of the stringent National Security Act in such cases, said action will be taken against all the accused. Any loss to public property will also be recovered from them, he said.
Amit Pathak, a senior police officer in Moradabad, said a COVID-19 patient had died in the area and the doctors were trying to quarantine his immediate contacts. State government data shows Moradabad has 19 coronavirus cases.
Meanwhile, the police launched a crack down on the attackers and arrested several people involved in the attack.
