In two different incidents, two patients under observation in Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, committed suicide. Both incidents have happened in an interval of a few hours.
The first patient Anadu native Unni (33), had earlier tried to escape from quarantine however was brought back to the hospital when people identified him wearing dress allocated by the hospital. A few hours later he hanged himself inside the isolation ward using clothes. He was taken to the Intensive Care Unit but died soon after. Unni’s latest test result had come out negative.
Murukesan, 38, a resident of Nedumangad, is the second one who committed suicide in the same hospital today. He was under observation since a couple of weeks following the symptoms of coronavirus.
Though hospital authorities are of the opinion that both deaths are associated with alcohol withdrawal symptoms, consecutive death of the youths have raised a question about the inefficiency in managing patients in the hospital.
Meanwhile, the State Human Rights Commission has voluntarily filed a case against the death of a patient in the Isolation Ward. The Commission’s Chairman, Justice Antony Dominic, has demanded an explanation from the Director of Medical Education and Superintendent of Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram.
