The mother of Anjana Harish alias Chinnu Zulfikar, student of the Government Brennan College, has filed a complaint before the DYSP, Kanjanhad (Kasargod), seeking a detailed probe into the ‘mysterious death’ of her daughter on May 13 at a resort in Goa, where she had gone along with her friends for a pleasure trip on March 17. They had to stay put at the resort as national lockdown was declared soon after.
In the complaint, the mother, Mini Harish, alleged that she suspected foul-play, as Anjana was mentally distressed and crying inconsolably when she called up her relatives a few hours before she allegedly committed suicide. The mother called upon the police to ‘uncover the mystery’ behind the death.
“She was repeatedly saying her friends had betrayed her when she talked over phone. She wanted to come back home,” a relative told our correspondent. According to the relative, they were not ready to believe the ‘suicide story’ as there were “many loose ends in the whole thing”. Also, the person quoted above said there was an attempt to put the blame on the family for the tragic death. “There is an attempt at character assassination of the family through certain social media outlets,” the person said.
Talking about Anjana, the relative said she used to be a “god-fearing, simple, studious girl” who after falling into the “racket” started doing drugs and consuming alcohol. She rebelled against the family and turned against her mother, whom she loved most. “This metamorphosis was beyond our comprehension. Her ‘friends’ had psychologically kidnapped her,” the person said.
Meanwhile, Hindu Aikya Vedi staged a demonstration in front of the Government Brennen College, demanding a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the whole episode as it suspected the role of Urban Naxals. Speaking at the event, Vedi district general secretary P V Shyam Mohan said: “The Brennen College campus has become a haven for Maoists and religious extremists. Only an NIA probe will unravel the real reason behind the tragedy.” Vedi leaders said they will organise agitations demanding ‘justice for Anjana’.
