The Assam cabinet has decided to request the Centre to make Assamese as the State Language of the state forever excluding in BTAD, Barak valley and hill districts. Talking to news persons in Guwahati after the cabinet meeting, senior minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, the Assam government would request the Centre to amend the Article 345 of the constitution to make Assamese as the state language.
The state cabinet also decided to bring a new bill in the next assembly session securing the land rights for the indigenous people. As per the new bill, only indigenous people could sell or buy land from another indigenous citizen. The cabinet also decided to make Assamese language as the compulsory subject in all schools up to 10th standard except in BTAD, Bodo dominated areas, Barak valley and hill districts. The minister said that 3 new Autonomous councils will be set up in the state for Koch – Rajbonshi, Moran and Matak communities. The cabinet also decided to request the Centre to conclude the Bodo Peace Accord at the earliest.
