This one leaf, flaxen and frayed
Flung far from the bough
In my path upon the road
Fluttering forlorn
Caught in the exhaust draft of passing cabs
Yet with crinkled courage
It greets me as I stride into the day
And out of nowhere pops the name ‘Aparna,
Leading me to yearn to know
A story of eternal love
Now folded into mythology
Taking me into a time lost in antiquity
I know not which Yuga or how many thousand years in past
But time travel I did with the solitary leaf
The highlands of the mighty Himalayas To A story unfolding of divine love
Of unmatched proportions
When Devi Parvati took upon herself
A penance of tremendous austerities
In her single minded goal to realize
The purpose of her birth
To break through the inert ‘vairagya, of the one and only
Whom even the mighty God’s considered as worthy of their obesiance
And bring him into the world of love and realizations
She was on a quest to gain the ultimate sacred knowledge
Of eternal Brahman and the cosmos
Resident in the one whom she considered as her beloved –
for her heart was with Devon ke Dev Mahadev
Her tapas stretched into 1000s of years
And so deep was her inner journey
Unknown to her tje seasons passed
The years stretched into millennium
She had given up subsistence
Of roots and water and even leaves
And thus the environ shaken
by the strength of her determination
Reverentially crowned her the name ‘Aparna’
The leaf listlessly told me
It’s loss at not being taken by Devi Parvati
Adrift far away from the tree
Once held aloft with pride
Basking in the sun and all it’s worldly glory
Now an ascetic seeking purpose
As I picked up this torn narrator
Of an eternal love
Inspiring me to delve
in the majestic curls
Of time and history
A tale of unmatched love
