The ongoing Andhra Pradesh Handloom Exhibition at Dilli Haat, Janakpuri, witnessed an exciting and interactive session led by renowned fashion designer Komal Luhariwala, who conducted a captivating saree draping workshop. The designer showcased various styles of draping, using exquisite handloom sarees sourced directly from the weavers of Andhra Pradesh, much to the delight of visitors.
The workshop, which attracted a diverse audience, saw a special enthusiasm from youngsters, many of whom were curious to explore traditional saree draping techniques. Komal Kumari’s hands-on approach, paired with her deep understanding of fabric, helped participants understand how to wear the six-yard marvel in both traditional and contemporary styles. From the classic Nivi drape to innovative fusion styles, the designer demonstrated the versatility of handloom sarees.
Visitors marveled at the rich texture, vibrant hues, and intricate craftsmanship of the sarees, which were directly brought from weavers, ensuring authenticity and promoting the weaver’s artistry. The designer stressed the importance of preserving India’s cultural heritage through handlooms, encouraging attendees to embrace the beauty of sustainable fashion.
“I’ve always believed that the charm of a saree lies in its simplicity, and when you have something as rich as a handloom saree, the possibilities are endless. I’m glad to see so many young people interested in this art form,” said Komal Luhariwala during the event.
The exhibition, organized to promote Andhra Pradesh’s handloom products, has attracted fashion enthusiasts, textile lovers, and people of all ages. The saree draping workshop served as a reminder of the timeless elegance of traditional attire, leaving visitors eager to experiment with the styles they learned.
The Andhra Pradesh Exhibition was inaugurated in the national capital on 7th October 2024, was graced by distinguished officials, including Smt. K. Sunitha, IAS, Principal Secretary to Government, Handlooms & Textiles, Andhra Pradesh; Dr. M. Beena, IAS, Development Commissioner, Handlooms, Government of India; and Smt. G. Rekha Rani, IAS, Commissioner of Handlooms & Textiles, Andhra Pradesh. A total of 26 stalls have been set up at the exhibition, featuring 20 handloom and 6 handicraft stalls.
An array of handloom products, including Gadwal sarees, Dharmavaram silk sarees, Kalamkari products, Polavaram, Uppada Jamdhani, Angara, Kuppadam, Venkatagiri, Madanapalli, Bobbili sarees, and Pulagutha sarees are available offering visitors a chance to explore the finest handloom products from Andhra Pradesh.
The exhibition was a part of the larger initiative to support local weavers and showcase their handloom creations by government of Andhra Pradesh, with Komal Luhariwala’s workshop being one of the many highlights.
