According to the figures from December 22 to 31, Malayalees drank Rs 600 crore worth of liquor coinciding with Christmas and New Year. Liquor sales stood at Rs 523 crore during the same period last year. This is the number at bars, beverages and consumer food outlets.
With an increase of 16% over the previous year, beverages sold liquor worth Rs 89.12 crore in the New Year. On the eve of Christmas alone, sales of beverages reached Rs 51.65 crore, which is 4.11 crore more than last year.
The highest sale of liquor in the state on Christmas Eve was at Ernakulam Nedumbassery outlet at Rs 63.28 lakh. On the eve of Christmas, beverage outlets, bars and warehouses sold liquor worth Rs 71.51 crore, a 6.88 crore increase over the last year.
