Director Lingusamy has opened up about the failure of the 2005 Tamil film ‘Ji’, starring Ajith and Trisha. Lingusamy, who had previously directed hit films such as ‘Run’, ‘Sandakozhi’ and ‘Paiyaa’, revealed in a recent interview that if he had made changes to ‘Ji’ as suggested by superstar Rajinikanth, the film may not have failed.
Lingusamy recounted how Rajinikanth had personally called and congratulated him after the success of ‘Run’ in 2002. During their conversation, Lingusamy shared the story of ‘Ji’ with Rajinikanth, who expressed his desire to act in the film. However, Lingusamy explained that the film’s protagonist was a college student, and therefore, the role would not be suitable for Rajinikanth.
Although Rajinikanth offered to change the story to accommodate him, Lingusamy declined the offer. ‘Ji’ was eventually released in 2005 with Ajith in the lead role, but it failed to impress the audience.
Lingusamy’s revelation sheds light on the importance of accepting feedback and making changes to a film’s story to increase its chances of success. While Lingusamy stuck to his creative vision for ‘Ji’, he admits that he may have made a mistake by not taking Rajinikanth’s suggestions into consideration.
Despite the setback, Lingusamy went on to direct more successful films, cementing his place in Tamil cinema.
