In a bid to cock a snook on Congress rebels and to show that he is the tallest Congress leader in Punjab, Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh managed to rope in three AAP rebel legislators — Sukhpal Khaira, Pirmal Singh and Jagdev Singh Kamalu — into the Congress fold.
Singh is facing rebellion within the party, as the state is heading for the assembly elections likely in March next year. The state Congress unit tweeted: “Chief Minister @capt_amarinder Singh before leaving for Delhi today welcomed @SukhpalKhaira MLA and former Leader of Opposition and his two AAP MLA colleagues namely Jagdev Singh Kamalu, MLA Maur and Pirmal Singh Dhaula, MLA Bhadaur into the party fold.”
Khaira, who is the chief of Punjabi Ekta Party, won on an AAP ticket from the Bholath assembly seat in 2017. He resigned from the AAP in January 2019. Before joining AAP, he was a Congress lawmaker and a staunch critic of Amarinder Singh.
Amarinder Singh was summoned in Delhi to meet the Congress committee looking to resolve infighting in the Punjab unit. The Chief Minister said the induction of the three legislators has been approved by Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
