Plenty of reports of Hindu girls being trapped into fraudulent ‘love affairs’ by radical Islamists in Kerala have come in media but rarely do similar instances involving Christian girls find place. One of the reasons is the Christian community was living in denial. But pushed to the wall by Islamic radicals, Christians are also coming out against ‘love jihad’ cases. Christian leaders reached out to Indus Scrolls with a heart-rending tale of one such family. According to a Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council official, more than 3,000 Christian girls were converted to Islam after being trapped them in ‘love jihad’ and some of them were used terror activities. The National Minorities Commission has also raised concern over such ‘conversions to terror’.
Niveditha’s story
Niveditha had joined a technical education institution in Techno Park in Kochi one year ago. On the first day after joining, one Amir (name changed), her senior, allegedly subjected Niveditha to ragging. But slowly he struck a rapport with her. He told her that he did not get parental love and wanted to loved. She was a gullible girl and he played with her emotions and sensitive nature. According to a relative, Amir had other plans which she could not figure out. He extracted ‘commitment’ from her that she won’t leave him.
Niveditha’s parents got wind of the romance in last December. In the meanwhile, she left her studies. Amir wanted Niveditha to convert to Islam. But parents said if it were true love why should she get converted. Later, Amir told Niveditha’s parents that there was no compulsion to convert to Islam and she could continue as a Christian. Niveditha was sent to her sister’s house. But Amir tried to emotionally blackmail her and she left her sister’s place to join him. At Amir’s she was allegedly put under pressure to convert to Islam. Finally, the 26-year-old woman had to yield to the pressure and adopted a new name Fathima.
Family sources say she was, however, not happy with her own decision and wanted to come back to her parents’ house. Initially her parents opposed. But later they invited her to come. Family sources claimed she regretted having given her word. Later, she posted a note on here WhatsApp status. The tone of the note conveyed her grief for ‘hurting’ parents.
Under the parents’ insistence, she decided to complete the course. To complete the course, she organised a part-time job. On her way to home, she met with an accident in which she died.
After she died, a group of Muslims allegedly came to disrupt the funeral as it was being conducted in a Church. But the parents put their foot down and the Islamist group had to beat a retreat. At least in death, they got their daughter back.
