Thalasserry Additional District Sessions Court has sentenced five CPI(M) workers to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 50,000 for killing a BJP worker, Nikhil Malayattu (23), at Eranjoli Kooli Bazar on March 5, 2008.
K Sreejith (39) of Vadakkumbadu, V Benoy (31) of Nittur, KP Manaf (42) of Nittur, PP Sunilkumar (51) of Vadakkumbadu and CK Marshood (34) of Nittur were the persons sentenced to life by the court on Monday. A total of eight persons were accused in the case. While M Sasidharan, the eighth accused, died during the trial period, two others, U Firoz and Valsan Vayanal, were acquitted by the court for lack of evidence.
The victim, Nikhil, was a lorry driver. The CPI(M) workers blocked his lorry and dragged him out and hacked him. When he tried to escape, the murderers chased him down and cut him into pieces.
